Alan Dundes was born in New York City on September 8, 1934. He earned a B.A. (1955) and a M.A. (1958) at Yale University. He received a Ph.D. in folklore from the University of Indiana in 1962. He joined the University of California, Berkeley anthropology faculty in 1963 and is widely credited with establishing folklore as a full-fledged academic discipline.
